Visitor visa guide for 🇷🇴 Romania

Romania applies Schengen style requirements and values clarity and completeness. If visiting a partner, ensure invitation, accommodation, and relationship evidence tell one consistent story.

Additional tips for our Schengen checklist.

Direct at Romanian Embassy: As of 2025, Romania has joined Schengen but still handles visas at its own Embassy in Bangkok. You must apply in person at the Romanian Embassy – they don’t use VFS. Schedule an appointment via their online system or email. Bring a printed Schengen visa application form (they may have a specific one on their site). Expect to be interviewed briefly when you submit (Romanian officers often ask a few questions about your trip).

Invitation letter requirement: Romania historically was strict, often requiring an official invitation approved by Romanian Immigration for private visits. Now under Schengen, they might relax this, but be prepared: your Romanian partner might need to provide either a notarized invitation letter or an immigration-approved invitation if asked. To be safe, have your partner write a detailed invitation letter (notarized in Romania if possible) stating they invite you, your relationship, and guaranteeing your return. Include evidence of the relationship (photos together, etc.) because Romania will look at genuineness carefully.

Strong documentation: The Romanian Embassy is known to be very meticulous. Ensure every required document is provided: flight bookings, insurance, bank statements, employment letter, proof of accommodation. If staying with your partner, they might require your partner’s property documents or rental contract to prove accommodation. Also include your partner’s Romanian ID or passport copy.

Financial scrutiny: Romania has lower average incomes, but ironically they scrutinize finances a lot to prevent overstay for work. Show ample financial means (they might want to see at least €50 per day of stay, if not more). If your partner sponsors you, they should provide a formal commitment in the invitation letter and prove their own income. Any sponsor document in Romanian (or any foreign language) should ideally be translated to English for clarity.

Return ties emphasis: The embassy will heavily evaluate your intent to return to Thailand. They may inquire about your job stability and how long you’ve known your partner. Provide a letter from your employer stating you’re expected back, or other proof like school enrollment if you study, or dependents in Thailand. Romania has denied visas in the past to people without strong ties, so don’t skimp on this part. Show anything that convinces them you will come back (even a letter from you promising to adhere to visa rules, though not required, could personalize your application).
