Invitation letter & notarization: For visiting a partner, include a comprehensive invitation letter from your partner in Portugal. Portuguese authorities (or the representing embassy) may prefer this letter to be notarized in Portugaliasservices.org.uk, especially if your partner is a Portuguese citizen. While not always explicitly required, a notarized invitation with your partner’s signature can add credibility. At minimum, the letter should have full names, passport details, address in Portugal, relationship explanation, and be signed. Attach your partner’s citizen ID or residence permit copy.
Quirks: If applying via the French system, be mindful of French requirements (like attestation d’accueil or similar) – but since Portugal is the destination, you’d substitute that with your partner’s invite letter and perhaps their proof of accommodation (lease or property deed)schengenvisas.com. If via Spanish, ensure to meet Spanish document standards (which might include that notarized invite). Essentially, adapt to the representing country’s checklist but insert Portugal-specific info.
Financial and travel plans: Show you have enough money for the trip. If you have a sponsor, include proof, but also indicate any plans within Portugal (e.g. side trips to Algarve, etc.) to justify the duration. Provide a clear flight itinerary into Portugal. They might be wary if you plan to land somewhere else and then go to Portugal, so ideally have tickets directly to Portugal (or a justified route).
Return ties: Regardless of representation, show strong return ties – job, family, etc. Portugal’s not known for high visa refusal rates, but since another embassy might process it, they will apply standard Schengen risk evaluation. A friendly, brief cover letter addressed to the Embassy (mentioning you’re aware your application for Portugal is being processed by them) expressing your intent to enjoy a holiday and return to Thailand could make a good impression.
