Visitor visa guide for 🇳🇱 Netherlands

The Netherlands can be strict on credibility and documentation consistency. Relationship visits should include strong proof, clear host support, and a realistic travel plan.

Additional tips for our Schengen checklist.

VFS Global (short stay): The Netherlands uses VFS in Bangkok for all visa submissions. You can also fill out the Schengen visa form online on the Dutch website to save time. Appointments get booked quickly around holidays (e.g. Songkran, New Year), so schedule in advance.

Sponsor form (optional): The Dutch have an optional “Proof of Sponsorship and/or Private Accommodation” form. Your partner in the Netherlands can fill this out and get it certified by the Dutch municipality. It’s not mandatory for a short visit, but if you (the Thai applicant) have low income, this form can be very helpful. If you use it, include the original form in your application along with your partner’s salary slips and ID.

Invitation letter & relationship proof: At minimum, include a good invitation letter from your partner stating you’re coming to visit them, with details of your relationship. The Netherlands is used to “Thai farang” couples; they often expect to see proof like photos together, especially if you’ve never traveled to NL before. Keep the tone factual in your letter (dates, intent to return, etc.).

Ties to Thailand: The Dutch Embassy is fairly strict on the requirement that you’ll return. They often specifically look for a return flight booking and a work certificate. If you’re unemployed or a freelancer, provide alternative evidence (e.g. proof of property, or if self-employed, business registration and a letter describing your work). Without clear ties, there’s a risk of refusal, so don’t skip this.

Financial insight: Even if your partner is sponsoring you, the Netherlands wants to see you have some personal means. They might check if your bank account has regular activity. If there are large recent deposits, explain them briefly (you can add a note). And if you have old passports with previous travel visas (especially to Schengen or other first-world countries), include copies – it builds confidence in your travel history.
