Visitor visa guide for 🇮🇹 Italy

Italy expects complete documents and a consistent travel plan. Relationship visits work best when invitation, accommodation, and proof of ties are clearly presented.

Additional tips for our Schengen checklist.

VFS Global in Bangkok: Italy requires you to apply via VFS; the Italian Embassy doesn’t take direct tourist visa applications. Appointments can be booked on the VFS website – try to pick a morning slot as sometimes they get busy later in the day.

Invitation letter: Have your Italian partner write a straightforward invitation letter (in English or Italian) stating they invite you to visit them, will provide accommodation at their address, and any other support. Attach a copy of their passport or Italian ID (and permesso di soggiorno if your partner is a foreign resident in Italy). Italy doesn’t usually require an official municipal invitation for short visits; a personal letter suffices.

Financial requirements: The Italian Embassy follows a table of minimum funds based on stay length (e.g., for 30 days around €2060 plus daily amounts). Make sure your bank statements (or sponsor’s financials) meet these. If your partner sponsors you, include their recent “proof of means” (like an employer letter, bank statement) and a letter of financial support. However, it helps if you can show some personal funds too.

Relationship proof & others: Include some proof of your relationship (photos, chats) but keep it concise – Italy cares more that you have either family ties or a genuine reason to go. They might not scrutinize your love story in detail, but it’s good to show you’ve met and stayed in touch. Also include your travel itinerary (places in Italy you will go together).

Return ties: Italy is generally reasonable on visitor visas but will deny if they suspect you might not return. Ensure you have your Thai employment letter, etc. If you’re between jobs, perhaps include a letter explaining your next plans in Thailand. For homemakers, showing strong family ties (like children or a spouse in Thailand, if applicable) can help convince them.
