Visitor visa guide for 🇮🇸 Iceland

Iceland often scrutinizes funding and the practicality of the trip due to high travel costs. Show realistic budgeting and strong proof of employment or obligations at home.

Additional tips for our Schengen checklist.

Handled by Denmark in Bangkok: Icelandic short-term visas are processed by the Royal Danish Embassy in Bangkok (they share services). You will apply at VFS Global, but essentially you’re following Denmark’s procedure. On the application form, select Iceland as destination; VFS will route your application to the Danish Embassy.

Documents & invitation: Prepare documents as if applying to Denmark. An invitation letter from your Icelandic partner is needed (or from your partner living in Iceland, even if they’re not Icelandic). There’s no separate Iceland form – a personal invite letter in English with your partner’s kennitala (ID number) and address is fine. Include evidence of your relationship (photos together, etc.) since the Danish officers reviewing it will want to see that context.

Financial & sponsor: Show you have adequate funds for Iceland (it’s expensive there!). If your partner is sponsoring you, mention that in the letter and include their financial proof (bank statement, employment letter). However, due to Iceland’s high cost of living, the embassy will be happier if you also show some personal savings for the trip.

Strong return ties: Because Iceland is remote and sometimes seen as a gateway to work (fishing, tourism jobs), they check return ties carefully. Emphasize your job in Thailand or studies or family. Provide a letter explaining you’re only going for a short visit to be with your loved one and that you have commitments pulling you back to Thailand.
