VFS Global submission: Hungary uses VFS in Bangkok for visa applications. Appointments are usually available, but try to avoid last-minute booking. The processing is done by the Hungarian Embassy. Typically, visas take around 10–15 days, but in 2024–2025 high season they’ve been busy, so apply early.
Invitation letter or official invite: Hungary does not strictly require an official invitation for a boyfriend/girlfriend visit, but they do have an official form if your partner wants to use it. In practice, a well-written invitation letter from your Hungarian partner (in English or Hungarian) works. It should state that they invite you, for how long, where you’ll stay, and that they take responsibility. Include a copy of their ID or passport. If your partner is not Hungarian (e.g. a foreigner living there), also include their residence permit.
Focus on relationship and purpose: The Hungarian Embassy will look at why you’re visiting. Clearly mark the purpose as “Visiting partner” on the form (rather than generic tourism). Provide evidence like photos of you together and trip plans. Hungary’s officers are generally understanding for genuine couples – many Thai-Hungarian couples have succeeded by showing honest proof of their relationship.
Financials and ties: Show you meet Hungary’s financial requirement (about €40 per day). If your partner sponsors you, include their bank statements and a sponsor letter. However, also show your own bank history (even if small) and assets in Thailand. And of course, include work or family documents to prove you’ll return. Hungary isn’t known for heavy refusals, but missing financial proof or lack of ties can still lead to rejection.
