Visitor visa guide for 🇫🇮 Finland

Finland often looks closely at finances and ties, especially for first time applicants. Keep your documents consistent and avoid vague explanations.

Additional tips for our Schengen checklist.

VFS + Finnish Embassy: Short-term visas for Finland are handled via VFS Global Bangkok. Book an appointment online; the actual decision comes from the Finnish Embassy in Bangkok. Finland allows applications up to 6 months early, and slots can be tight in high season, so plan ahead.

Invitation letter: Use the official Finnish invitation template if available (Finland sometimes provides a form for inviting friends/family). If not, a detailed letter from your Finnish partner is fine. It should state your relationship, how long you’ll stay, and an assurance you’ll depart on time. Include evidence of relationship (photos together, etc.), but Finland doesn’t need anything overly personal – just enough to show it’s genuine.

Possible phone interview: In some cases, the Finnish Embassy might call you (or even your partner) to verify details. Don’t panic if they call – just answer honestly about your travel plans and relationship. This can happen if something in your application needs clarification.

Return ties emphasized: Finland carefully assesses your intent to return. Make sure to attach proof like an employment letter (with approved leave dates), business documents, or family documents. If you have children in Thailand or property, mention them in a cover letter. Strong ties will greatly help your case.

Financial matters: Finland expects you to have €30 per day of stay (roughly) available. Show your bank statements; if your partner sponsors you, include their financials plus a letter stating they will cover costs. The embassy will want to see that you won’t run out of funds during the trip.
